A16z's crypto arm is raising a $2.2 billion fund — and for the first time ever, the money is not for crypto at all. Traders are watching because one of crypto's biggest backers is now spending its newest billions on AI, quantum computing and robots instead.
Key points:
- A16z crypto has renamed itself "a16z New Frontiers" and launched its first-ever non-crypto fund.
- The fund targets $2.2 billion, with about $500 million already secured from a single sovereign wealth fund.
- The money will back quantum computing, AI, robotics, biotech, manufacturing, energy and space — while a16z says crypto investing continues as normal.
Andreessen Horowitz built its crypto name on early bets on Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap, so this shift is a big signal. The firm says a16z crypto is not disappearing — it is being subsumed into the wider New Frontiers arm, and its crypto investing will continue from the broader platform, with part of the team focused mainly on crypto stages such as token launches.
The new fund is still being raised, and the firm would not say exactly how the $2.2 billion will be split or give a closing timeline. It is not expected to be the firm's last crypto fund either — a16z simply says more details on future crypto funds will come later.

What does this mean for crypto?
A16z is not alone. Paradigm, once purely crypto, has widened into AI and other frontier technology, and other crypto-native firms are quietly doing the same as AI draws the biggest cheques in venture capital. For crypto traders, the message is mixed: the industry's richest backers are not leaving, but their newest and biggest money is now chasing other themes too — which means crypto projects may have to fight harder for venture attention in 2027.
