Bitcoin Drops to $81,400 as Chip Stocks Crash — Can $80K Hold?

Bitcoin price news drops to $81,400 Kospi chip stocks crash options downside protection trading

Bitcoin fell to about $81,400 on Tuesday even after US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $527 million in their biggest inflow day in nearly a month. The drop matters because options traders are now paying up for downside protection while stocks slide — and that puts the key $80,000 support level in focus.

Key points:
• Bitcoin slipped about 0.5% to near $81,400 despite the strongest daily spot ETF inflow in nearly a month.
• South Korea's Kospi index crashed 3.7% as Samsung and SK hynix fell on AI spending worries.
• Deribit options data shows traders paying extra for put protection, a bearish hedge against a deeper fall.

The selling started in Asia. South Korea's Kospi ended the day down 3.73% at 5,552.74 — its lowest close in more than six months — as chip giants Samsung Electronics fell about 3% and SK hynix lost about 4.2%. AI worries also hit new listings hard, with data-centre firm Elice plunging more than 30% on its market debut, and foreign investors sold about 530 billion won of Korean shares in the session.

Normally, Monday's ETF money should have lifted the price. US spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $526.7 million on Monday, the biggest day since September 22, with BlackRock's IBIT alone taking in $665.2 million. Instead, Bitcoin still slipped, which shows how strongly the Asian stock sell-off is weighing on crypto right now: ETF buying is supporting the market, but it is not strong enough today to push the price higher. Other big coins were also red, with Ethereum near $2,380, Solana near $104 and XRP near $1.29.

Can $80,000 hold?

Options traders are bracing for more downside. On Deribit, the implied volatility of 25-delta put options is trading at a premium to calls — around the 40% area — which means traders are paying extra to insure against a fall, a sign the market leans bearish in the short term. Bitcoin has held above $80,000 since the early-October sell-off, so traders will watch that line closely, along with the next ETF flow figures and whether Asian stocks steady. A clean hold above $80,000 keeps the recovery story alive; a break below it would open the door to a deeper slide, while a move back above $82,500 would ease the pressure.
