BREAKING: $13 Trillion Giant Charles Schwab Opens Bitcoin and Ethereum Trading to All Clients — Three More Coins Coming This Year
Charles Schwab has completed the rollout of its Schwab Crypto platform, making direct Bitcoin and Ethereum trading available to all of its clients. The brokerage confirmed the move on its third-quarter earnings call on October 15, ending a phased launch that started with an employee pilot and a limited group of retail customers.
The scale here is huge. Schwab manages about $13.33 trillion in client assets and serves around 40.3 million active brokerage accounts, making it one of the largest brokerages in the United States. Clients trade Bitcoin and Ethereum in accounts linked to their normal brokerage accounts, paying a fee of 0.75% on each trade, with custody handled through Charles Schwab Premier Bank and trade execution supported by Paxos.
Schwab is not stopping at two coins. The company says it plans to add three more cryptocurrencies by the end of this year, with reports naming Solana, Avalanche and Chainlink, and it is also rolling out crypto transfers so clients can move existing holdings onto the platform instead of keeping them on separate exchanges.
For traders, this is another big mainstream door opening for Bitcoin and Ethereum. Millions of ordinary brokerage customers can now buy crypto beside their stocks without opening an exchange account, which could bring steadier retail demand over time and put fresh fee pressure on platforms like Coinbase and Kraken.
The launch also lands in a volatile week, with Bitcoin recovering back above $82,000 after a brief dip below $80,000 on hot US inflation data. Big brokerages expanding crypto access during a sell-off is a sign that long-term institutional demand is still building, even when short-term prices are shaky.
