BREAKING: Coinbase, Which Holds 5% of All Bitcoin, Urges Quantum Fix to Start Now — Warns Migration Will Take Years
Coinbase has told the Bitcoin world not to wait. In a new blog post published on October 14, the US exchange said Bitcoin should begin preparing now for powerful quantum computers of the future. The warning carries extra weight because Coinbase holds about 5% of all Bitcoin in existence for its clients, including banks, asset managers and hedge funds.
The risk is still in the future, but it is serious. A strong enough quantum computer could work out a wallet's private key from its public key and drain the coins inside. No such machine exists today, but Google researchers have suggested one could become feasible as early as 2029, which leaves Bitcoin only a few years to get ready.
Coinbase is asking for a step-by-step plan. It wants Bitcoin's transaction format to support new post-quantum signatures that can be added or changed over time, and a staged move where active wallets can start using quantum-resistant or hybrid signatures early, without forcing every user to switch at once. It also wants reliable software and support for both normal users and big institutions that protect keys with multi-party systems.
One hard question will be debated separately: what happens to old, dormant or late-moving wallets if Bitcoin one day limits its old signature types. Coinbase said that debate should not slow down protection for everyone else, and that any rescue path for late wallets must itself be quantum-safe.
For traders, this is not an emergency for today, and it does not change Bitcoin's price on its own. It is a long-term security story. Because Bitcoin is decentralized, any consensus change and wallet migration can take years, so an early start protects confidence in BTC as a long-term store of value. Traders will watch whether developers and major custodians turn this call into real upgrade proposals in the coming months.
