BREAKING: UK Court Moves Britain Closer to Keeping $5 Billion in Seized Bitcoin — 61,000 BTC in Focus

Bitcoin price news UK court ruling 61,000 seized BTC $5 billion Zhimin Qian trading

A London court has moved Britain a step closer to keeping one of the biggest Bitcoin seizures in history. The High Court ruled on Monday that Chinese law, not English law, will govern fraud victims' claims to about 61,000 Bitcoin, worth roughly £3.8 billion, or about $5 billion at current prices. The coins were seized by London's Metropolitan Police and are now at the centre of a major legal fight.

The case goes back to Zhimin Qian, who ran a large Ponzi-style scheme in China between 2014 and 2017 through her company. More than 128,000 investors lost money. Qian converted much of the money into Bitcoin and fled to Britain in 2017. She later pleaded guilty in the UK case linked to the seized coins.

The victims wanted English law to apply, because it might have given them a stronger route to claim a property interest in the Bitcoin and its big price gains. The judge sided with UK authorities, pointing out that the scheme, the sales pitch, the payments and the losses all happened in China. That means the victims' property claims must be tested under Chinese law instead.

This ruling does not finally decide who owns the 61,000 BTC, and it does not award the coins to the British government yet. It does narrow the victims' path to recovery and improves the chances that the UK Treasury will eventually keep most of the value. The victims' lawyers plan to appeal, and a further hearing is expected to decide whether any victims can prove an interest in the coins.

For traders, the story matters because 61,000 BTC is a very large amount of supply sitting in government hands. There is no announcement of any sale, and the legal process is not finished. Still, markets always watch what governments do with seized Bitcoin, especially after the United States created a strategic Bitcoin reserve in 2025 for coins seized in enforcement cases. With Bitcoin trading near $83,000, any future decision on this UK stash will be watched closely.
