Malaysia and Thailand Join Singapore's BLOOM Cross-Border Stablecoin Push — What Happens Next?

Malaysia Thailand Singapore BLOOM stablecoin cross-border push

Singapore's digital money club just tripled in size. Malaysia and Thailand have joined Singapore's BLOOM initiative, putting three of Asia's biggest central banks behind cross-border payments powered by stablecoins and tokenized deposits.

Key points:

  • Bank Negara Malaysia and the Bank of Thailand joined Singapore's BLOOM initiative as policymaker members.
  • BLOOM helps banks use stablecoins and tokenized deposits for cross-border payments, cutting costs and setup time.
  • Participants already include Mastercard, Visa, Ripple and the World Bank Group — big institutional backing.

The announcement came on Friday from the Monetary Authority of Singapore. BLOOM — short for Borderless, Liquid, Open, Online, Multi-currency — is a public-private initiative that lets banks settle payments across borders without building a separate deal with every counterparty. Instead of old correspondent banking chains, money moves through regulated stablecoins and tokenized deposits.

Singapore launched BLOOM in October 2025, building on its earlier Project Orchid work. The initiative also covers corporate cash management, trade finance and payments run by AI agents within set limits. With Malaysia's ringgit stablecoin pilots starting in 2026 — announced by Bank Negara Malaysia in February — the timing lines up neatly.

Watch for real transaction volumes and which banks go live first. Asia already leads the world in stablecoin settlement experiments, and three central banks moving together gives the idea serious weight. The more corridors open — Singapore-Malaysia, Singapore-Thailand — the more demand there is for compliant, well-regulated dollar and regional-currency stablecoins. That is a slow but powerful tailwind for the stablecoin market.
