BREAKING: Deutsche Bank to Launch Bitcoin and Ethereum Custody Within Weeks — Germany's Biggest Bank Opens to Institutions
Germany's biggest bank is about to hold crypto for its clients. Deutsche Bank says its first digital asset custody service is only weeks away, starting with Bitcoin and Ethereum. Corporate bank co-head Gerald Podobnik shared the timeline on October 16 during the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, in comments reported by Reuters.
The service is built for institutions and companies, not retail users. Asset managers, hedge funds, brokers and large firms will be able to keep Bitcoin and Ether with the bank instead of managing wallets and private keys themselves. Deutsche Bank will handle the wallets and keys, working with Swiss technology firm Taurus, which it backed in a $65 million funding round in 2023.
This launch has been building for a while. The bank first set out the plan on September 16, expecting its first European clients to go live in 2026. There is still no exact start date, because the final step depends on completing the regulatory process and technical sign-off. No retail account or trading app has been announced.
Custody is only the first step. Later stages are expected to add ways to move money into and out of major stablecoins, tokenized deposit products, and support for clients issuing digital securities such as bonds. After the German start, the bank plans to take the service to major Asian financial centres in 2027.
For traders, this is another sign that big banks keep building crypto rails even while prices stay under pressure, with Bitcoin trading near $81,500 and Ethereum near $2,420. Bank custody does not buy coins by itself, so it is not instant buying pressure — but it makes it much easier for large institutions to hold crypto inside a regulated bank they already trust, which can support demand over time.
