BREAKING: Metaplanet Raises About $340 Million in Bonds to Cut Bitcoin Loan Risk — Its 44,000 BTC Stay Untouched

Metaplanet Bitcoin news $340 million bonds repay BTC-backed loans 44000 BTC treasury trading

Japan's Metaplanet, one of the world's biggest corporate Bitcoin holders, announced on October 13 that it plans to raise about 52 billion yen — roughly $340 million — through new zero-interest convertible bonds that mature in 2031.

The money is NOT for buying more Bitcoin this time. About 23.6 billion yen will go to repay loans that are backed by its Bitcoin, and up to 28.3 billion yen will be used to buy back its own shares.

The reason is risk. Metaplanet held about 44,000 Bitcoin at the end of September, worth around $3.6 billion, but its Bitcoin-backed borrowing had grown to about $650 million. That pushed its leverage ratio to about 17.7%, well above the roughly 10% level the company says it prefers, so a sharp Bitcoin fall could put pressure on those loans.

The bonds are due in October 2031 and are being sold to overseas investors, with Merrill Lynch International leading the deal and issuance planned for October 29. The share buyback is part of a wider program of up to 60 billion yen.

For traders, this is a clear sign that even strong Bitcoin treasury companies are now working to lower loan risk instead of only stacking more coins. If Bitcoin holds its key levels, this cleaner balance sheet could help Metaplanet — but if BTC falls hard, other treasury firms with big loans will face the same test.
