Sparkassen Launches Bitcoin Trading for 5 Coins — 230 Banks to Join?

Sparkassen Bitcoin news Germany savings banks launch crypto trading banking app 5 coins DekaBank price trading

Germany's Sparkassen savings banks have put Bitcoin inside their regular banking app, launching crypto trading on October 19 with five coins and more than 230 banks lining up to join. For traders, it is a strong sign that Europe's big savings-bank network now treats crypto as a normal banking product — one customers can buy next to their everyday accounts.

Key points:
• Sparkassen launched crypto trading on October 19 inside its banking app, powered by DekaBank.
• Customers can buy and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Polygon for €0.99 per order plus a spread.
• Five banks are live first, with 30 to 40 more expected to join each month into 2027.

How does the new service work?

Customers open a separate crypto account with DekaBank inside the Sparkasse app's investment section — no brokerage account and no separate exchange account is needed. DekaBank, the Sparkassen group's own securities house, gives a binding price quote for a short time before each trade, and trading is generally available even outside normal exchange hours. DekaBank holds the coins for customers in a shared custody wallet with support from BΓΆrse Stuttgart Digital, and withdrawals are only allowed to approved providers, not to any personal wallet a customer chooses.

The rollout starts small and grows in phases. Five savings banks are live first, including Frankfurter Sparkasse and Sparkasse Karlsruhe, out of a network of about 339 banks. More than 230 have expressed interest, each bank decides for itself when to join, and most that plan to take part are expected to be connected during the first half of 2027. The banks are keeping their message cautious: crypto is described as highly speculative, a total loss is possible, the coins carry no deposit insurance, and no investment advice is given — customers trade on their own decisions.

Why it matters for traders

German savings banks avoided retail crypto trading for years because of volatility and investor-protection worries, so this launch is a real change of direction — under the EU's MiCA rules and German oversight, a trusted local bank app now competes directly with specialist crypto exchanges and trading apps. For exchanges, that is new competition for German retail flow; for the market, a bank channel that adds 30 to 40 institutions a month could become a steady source of new demand, arriving while Bitcoin trades near $81,700 in a cautious market.

What happens next?

Traders will watch the joining pace: if Sparkassen keeps adding banks at the planned speed and customers actually start trading in the app, Germany — already 13th in Chainalysis' 2026 global adoption ranking — could see bank-led crypto buying grow through 2027. If sign-ups stay slow, the service may remain a small extra feature rather than a market mover. Either way, the direction is clear: in Germany, crypto is moving from exchange apps into the banking app itself.
